Dr. Janet Breslin-Smith
President, Crosswinds International Consulting
Dr. Breslin-Smith, a Professor of National Security Strategy for 14 years at the National War College in Washington, DC, was the first woman to Chair the Department of National Security Strategy. She was named Outstanding Professor at the College in 2006. Prior to her academic career, she was Legislative Director for Senator Patrick J. Leahy and Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
Dr. Janet Breslin-Smith travels across cultures, both bureaucratic and geo- strategic. As President of Crosswinds International Consulting, she draws on her 30-year career in public service, including leadership roles in the United States Senate, the National War College, and in Saudi Arabia, where she focused on higher education and outreach to women in the Middle East. She resided in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 2009 through 2013, with her husband, Ambassador James Smith. She has written and lectured on strategy and culture, macro-economics and Islam, Women, Islam and Saudi Arabia. Her article, “The Struggle to Erase Saudi Extremism” appeared in November 2015 in the New York Times. She is the co-author of The National War College: A History of Strategic Thinking in Peace and War.
Dr. Breslin-Smith earned her Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and her undergraduate degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California.
Ms. Maggie Hahn
Military Affairs Relationship Director, USAA
Maggie joined the USAA team in June 2003 during her husband’s final tour in the US Marine Corps before his military retirement. While active, she endured 9 deployments and 6 PCS moves which gave her unique understanding of the military lifestyle and its challenges. In her current role, she utilizes her 26+ year military spouse experience to advocate for the military community at large as well as lead USAA’s VETNet Employee Resource Group (ERG) internally. Maggie has extensive experience managing USAA’s Military Affairs advocacy relationship with a number of key external organizations including Blue Star Families, National Military Spouse Network (NMSN), U.S. Chamber Hiring our Heroes, Phroogal: Road to Financial Wellness and Heroes at Home.
Prior to joining Military Affairs, Maggie managed USAA’s Lobby Operations in the Federal Savings Bank; leading a face to face team of highly skilled deposit and insurance representatives, serving over 50k members a month between Personal Banking, Teller Operations and Wealth Management.
Prior to joining USAA, Maggie was an entrepreneur, created a company called Details-Details facilitating on time mortgage closings, was also a Professional Development Trainer for Marine Corps Community Services and volunteered hundreds of hours for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. Maggie holds a BA in Communications, has attained numerous training certificates, maintains her P&C License and holds an RCC Coaching Designation.
In her spare time, Maggie enjoys visiting her son Michael, a recent graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York as well as her daughter Courtney a Junior at Texas Tech University. She would also eventually like to publish a series of books on surviving and thriving as a military spouse using her experience to educate and comfort others.
Ms. Suzie Schwartz
President, Military Spouse Programs (Victory Media)
Suzie Schwartz has long been a champion for military spouses and families, working tirelessly to support them in achieving their goals by promoting selflessness, teamwork, and a special sense of military community. She supports, and is active in, numerous military philanthropies and assistance programs.
She currently serves as the Vice President for Military Spouse Programs for Victory Media. She provides high-level strategic guidance for Victory Media’s Military Spouse brand, which includes Military Spouse magazine, Militaryspouse.com, the Military Spouse of the Year® program, and the Military Spouse Town Hall.
Suzie is a current member of the Fisher House Foundation Board of Trustees and serves on the Board of Advisors of the National Military Family Association. She worked with the Fisher House Foundation to establish the Fisher House in St. Louis, MO and more recently in the establishment of another facility at Dover, DE Air Force Base. These homes, both now in full operation, provide family members with a comfortable and supportive place to stay while supporting a hospitalized family member or during the unanticipated loss of a loved one.
She also sits on the Air Force Enlisted Village Board of Advisors and is the Spouse Representative on the Air Force Retiree Council.
Suzie is the spouse of former Air Force Chief of Staff, General (retired) Norty Schwartz and has worked tirelessly to find solutions on issues affecting military families. She continues to support Operation Homefront, the Armed Services YMCA, and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors with her time and efforts to promote programs that benefit military families.

Sue Hoppin is the founder and president of the National Military Spouse Network, a consultant on military family issues and the co-author of, “A Family’s Guide to the Military for Dummies”. Before founding the NMSN, Sue served as the first deputy director for spouse outreach for a military affiliated non-profit with a 375,000+ membership. She is a recognized subject matter expert on military spouse and family issues and has spoken to audiences nationwide ranging from installation career events to leadership training sessions and national conferences.
Sue holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Denver, a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Oklahoma and a post graduate certificate in non-profit management from Georgetown University.
Carol Bowser is the president of Conflict Management Strategies Inc. and is an expert in workplace conflict –what creates it and how to resolve it. While she HATES arguments, she loves maintaining sanity and increasing production by jumping into conflict to fully resolve it. “…What I really like is listening to people’s stories and working outside the legal system to repair workplace relationships…”
She received her law degree from Seattle University School of Law and her Mediation Training through Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution. Carol is a speaker, trainer, and consultant for employers on how to avoid workplace conflict.
Carol Fishman Cohen
Carol Fishman Cohen, CEO of iRelaunch is a leading expert on career reentry. She consults to some of the world’s largest corporations on career reentry strategy and programming. Her seminal Harvard Business Review article “The 40 Year Old Intern” and her TED talk “How to get back to work after a career break” focuses on the use of the internship as a vehicle for employers to engage with experienced professionals returning from career break. Carol originated and co-leads the STEM Reentry Task Force with the Society of Women Engineers, in which 7 major global engineering-based companies are piloting reentry internship programs in 2016. The iRelaunch Return to Work Conference is the largest and longest running dedicated career reentry event and the major external supplier of successful candidates for the Wall Street reentry internship programs. Carol has presented on career reentry strategy more than 200 times to combined audiences of over 16,000 people.
Ray Crowell is fueling the veteran & spouse-led startup renaissance in DC, providing a peer-learning environment for entrepreneurs to Discover, Grow, Innovate, and Connect. He leads a team of supportive mentors, industry experts, strategic partners, and dedicated founders over at Bunker Labs DC.
Ray is obsessed with engaging military veterans and their spouses to start, innovate, and scale the next generation of high-growth companies. Ray unleashed his entrepreneurial spirit while on active duty (USAF), accelerating chapter-driven non-profits.
Following a stretch as a Department of Air Force executive and government contractor, he joined the Patriot Boot Camp team as advisor and devoted roadie. Ray recently launched Ascent 7 Ventures, which will be debuting its first App (managing carpool pick-up for charter schools) very very soon. He has a BA, MA, a stack of executive development program certs in business and public policy, and was a Harvard Kennedy School Fellow at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy.

Janet Farley offers military service members and their families her own brand of straight-forward career management and job search advice. Janet is the author of the Military-to-Civilian Career Transition Guide, 2nd Edition, the Military Spouse’s Complete Guide to Career Success and she writes the JobTalk column for Stars and Stripes Newspaper. Amy Schofield ACWR has been in the recruiting, career coaching, and resume writing fields for 10+ years. She has provided resume development strategies to job seekers worldwide with various backgrounds and experience levels. In April 2011, Amy launched Schofield Strategies. Julie was born and raised in Washington State. She graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in English and earned an MS in Human Resources Management from Troy University. She is also a certified Professional in Human Resources.
Over the last 13 years, Julie has held various Human Resource positions starting her career at FHC Health Systems in Norfolk, Virginia, then moving to Landrum Professional Services in Pensacola, Florida, Cambridge Health Alliance Physicians Organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Military Officers Association of America in Alexandria, Virginia where she served as the Director of Human Resources. Julie currently resides in Spokane, Washington where she is the Human Resources and Operations Manager for a law firm.
Julie was lucky enough to choose a career that easily transfers between employers as her husband’s assignments moved them from city to city. She holds a special interest in career building for military spouses as she feels it is important to have something personal outside of our military lifestyle.
Fred Wellman is a retired Army officer turned serial and social entrepreneur. He is a graduate of West Point and the Harvard Kennedy School serving 22 years in the Army as an aviator and public affairs officer and four combat tours. He is the Founder and CEO of ScoutComms, a B Corp communications and advocacy firm focused on veterans and military families. He and his wife Crystal also co-own Ladyburg Bath and Body Apothecary, a growing handmade bath and body retail boutique with locations in Fredericksburg and Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
In addition to serving as the Entrepreneur in Residence for NMSN, Fred also serves on the National Board of Directors for the National Desert Storm War Memorial and the Board of Advisors for No One Left Behind.
Dr. Krista Wells
Dr. Krista Wells is a certified professional coach dedicated to empowering military spouses. In her private practice, she focuses on improving her clients’ health, increasing their wealth, and strengthening their relationships. In addition to her private clients, Krista offers keynote speeches, workshops for organizations and military bases, and writes for various military publications. She recently launched The Military Spouse Show podcast in an effort to expand her reach and connect with the broader military spouse community.
